With 24 Grand Slam singles titles and still going strong at age 37, Novak Djokovic has separated himself from Rafael Nadal (22 majors) and Roger Federer (20 majors) as the greatest tennis player of his generation, perhaps ever. The question is not if but when Novak will secure number 25 to stand alone among men and women – Margaret Court also has 24 – as the all-time leader in major championships.
Featured here is Novak Djokovic 2022’s match-worn and dual-signed outfit from the 2022 French Open with outstanding provenance. 2022 was a bizarre season for the Serbian legend. It started with him being forced to withdraw from the Australian Open due to his refusal to take the COVID-19 vaccine. He also missed the U.S. Open for the same reason. Overall, he finished the year with a 42-7 record and won five tournaments, including Wimbledon for an unprecedented fourth straight time. At Roland Garros, attempting to defend his 2021 French Open title, Djoker cruised through his first four matches without losing a set. Facing Nadal in the Quarterfinals, he succumbed to the clay court master in four sets that took over four hours. (Nadal would go on to win his 14th French Open.)
The predominantly red polo shirt and white shorts each have player-exclusive tagging from Lacoste, the longtime apparel sponsor for Djokovic. The red shirt (size M) has white, gray and black design patterns on the front with the Lacoste alligator logo on the left chest, the brand’s written logo on the right sleeve (and upper back), and Novak’s player logo on the left sleeve. Djoker has autographed the torso in black marker. The corresponding white trunks (size M) have a red stripe running along the rear and a black/red designed waistband. Djoker has signed on the upper thigh in black marker. Both signatures show evidence of being signed when sweaty.
Our consignor, who knows Novak personally, procured this outfit and got Djokovic to sign both items after he bowed out to Nadal in the Quarterfinals. This outfit is an exact style-match to the first round, third round and Quarterfinals vs. Nadal, but the non-unique manufacturing characteristics make a conclusive photo-match extremely difficult. Sports Investors has authenticated the outfit as match-worn during the 2022 French Open. Both autographs certified by PSA/DNA.
