In 2024, Rafael Nadal retired from tennis after a GOAT-worthy career that lasted 23 years. At age 38, the beloved Spaniard was done dealing with two decades of pain in his foot from the incurable Mueller-Weiss syndrome. It was truly the end of an era. Who will ever match Rafa’s athleticism, perseverance, intensity, and desire to compete on the court? We know one thing. No player will come close to equaling his 14 French Open titles and dominance on clay. His 22 Grand Slams overall are second only to Novak Djokovic on the men’s all-time list.
In 2024 we sold Rafa’s 2010 U.S. Open Final match worn shirt for a then-record $72,000. Presented here is the Nike shirt Nadal wore in the Semifinals of the 2013 U.S. Open against Richard Gasquet of France on September 7, 2013. It has been conclusively photo-matched by Sports Investors Authentication using multiple images. The #2 seeded Nadal won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) and 6-2, taking complete control of the match during the second set tiebreaker. This set up a classic final against #1 seeded Djokovic. Nadal defeated his longtime rival (6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1) for his second U.S. Open title and lucky number 13 on his grand slam mantel. The victory also catapulted Rafa to the world #1 ranking. He finished the 2013 calendar season with an incredible 75-7 record that included two majors.
The white Nike player-exclusive shirt has a black Swoosh logo on the left chest and Rafa’s personal bull brand logo in black on the right sleeve. SIA was able to conclusively match the shirt thanks to the placement of the logo patches in relation to the mesh holes and light blue ‘X’ pattern on the front. Another interesting pattern of 16 air holes in black is designed on the upper back. Inside the collar is Nike flag tagging that reads “CUSTOM ATHLETE” with no size indicated. On the inner front left tail are wash instructions with a “FA130811SAC CUSTM” coded manufacturer’s flag tag. The shirt exhibits evidence of heavy wear with sweat staining around the collar and stretching throughout. It was procured by our consignor from a member of Nadal’s inner circle shortly after the tournament. A letter of provenance is provided along with full authentication paperwork from Sports Investors.
