Addendum: Rivera wore this jersey for his 3rd-to-last MLB win not 2nd-to-last as stated in catalog.
We should all thank Panamanian scout Chico Heron for discovering a lanky 20-year-old former shortstop with an 85-mph fastball in 1990. Heron got the Yankees to sign Mariano Rivera for $3000. The rest as they say is history. Right up until his death in 2008 Heron was a father-figure to Rivera. “He was twice older than me but I loved that man” Rivera said. “He used to tell me to work hard be committed be respectful trust the Lord and be able to do it in tough situations. He was always encouraging me to just do it don’t give up—even before he passed away.” A lesson certainly learned and preached by the greatest closer of all-time and last to wear number 42. Rivera signed and dedicated this special game-worn jersey from his 2013 farewell season—worn four games including the 3rd-to-last win of his MLB career—to Heron’s widow. It comes directly from the Heron family with MLB Authentication further verifying its game use.
According to the MLB database Rivera wore this jersey 6/2/13 vs. Boston (did not pitch) 8/20/13 in a doubleheader vs. Toronto (pitched both games) and 9/21/13 vs. San Francisco (did not pitch). In the first game of the doubleheader against the Blue Jays Rivera came on with one out in the 9th inning and retired both batters he faced to finish a 8-4 Yankees victory. In the 2nd game Rivera began the 9th inning with the score tied 2-2 and held the Jays scoreless striking out one. The Yanks won it 3-2 in the bottom half on Jayson Nix’s walk-off single to plate Ichiro Suzuki. Rivera got the ‘W’ to push his season record to 4-2. He would record just two more wins (9/8 and 9/12) before it was all said and done. In his final season at 43 years old Mo saved 44 games and went 6-2 with a 2.11 ERA a shade below his career mark of 2.21. He struck out 54 in 64 innings with just nine walks. Simply amazing. Rivera holds the record with 652 career saves one that may never be broken.
A true collector's item Rivera's 2013 farewell season the classic Yankees home pinstriped jersey comes in Mo’s size 46 with appropriate manufacturer’s tagging on the front left tail. The "2013" year and "46" size strip tags appear just below the Majestic Authentic Collection tag with MLB hologram (EK 641278) and New Yankees bar code (0000003422) identifiers. The 'NY' on the front and his number "42" on the back are both stitched in navy numbers and letters. The shirt exhibits solid game use with some light brown spots on the front and back. Rivera has added his beautiful autograph on the back numbers with numerous inscriptions in lovely 9-10/10 silver marker. The ‘4’ reads “Para Estela de parte de su amigo - Mariano Rivera - Last to wear #42.” The ‘2’ reads "2013 Game Used - 652 Career Saves - Exit Sandman - 1995-2013 Final Season.” He dedicated the jersey to Estela Heron widow of Chico Heron and remains close to the Heron family. These career notations tell just a small part of Mariano Rivera’s importance to the game. Inside and out there may never be a more respected and beloved player from the modern era. After all it takes someone truly special to retire Jackie Robinson's uniform number forever.
