In 2008, Upper Deck released a premium subset of the basketball legends including the likes of Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson and, of course, Bill Russell, the greatest winner in sports history. Most players were crash numbered to super low editions (i.e. LE/23 for MJ, LE/24 for Kobe). Some editions went even lower if they signed in gold (i.e. LE/10 for MJ and Magic).
This #CBR Bill Russell card, numbered “3/5,” is signed in immaculate 10/10 gold pen by the 11-time champ. The gold border of the enclosed autograph against a black background gives it striking eye appeal. There is also a Celtic clover at the bottom with a green “RED” in the middle to honor the great Red Auerbach. (Other Celtics in this limited set like Bill Sharman had this Auerbach tribute.) Pictured above the autograph is the face of a young Russell from the 1960’s. Limited to only five Bill Russell examples, this 2008-09 UD Black Commemorative Logos Autograph is an extremely rare release. For reference, a Jordan gold auto (#’d 4/10) graded BGS NM 7 sold for $4,920 in March 2024.
Graded NM-MT 8 by BGS with a perfect 10 auto grade. BGS subgrades: centering 9.5; edges 8.5; corners 8; surface 8. (With those subgrades, this is a strong candidate for PSA crossover.)
