A Safety in the NFL has to do everything from covering wideouts and tight ends to stopping the run breaking up screens and blitzing the quarterback. Most teams figure out a way to divide these responsibilities between players with diverse skills. On the Pittsburgh Steelers Troy Polamalu pretty much handles them all. The most recognizable player in the leagueand perhaps the most athleticTroy is a human wrecking ball on Sundays and an orchid-growing spiritualist the rest of the week. The former College All-American at USC was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2010 with the Steelers. He helped lead Pittsburgh to victory in Super Bowls XL and XLIII.
Serious game-worn jersey collectors understand how tough Pittsburgh Steelers game jerseys are to obtain and this is a remarkable example from one of the most popular players in the history of the storied franchise. Offered is Polamalus jersey that he wore during the 2009 season which saw him appear in only five games due to injury. This is a black size "44" Reebok jersey with proper tagging throughout. All lettering and numerals are sewn on. A strip tag with year "09" and size "44" is sewn into the collar. Jersey shows solid use. In spite of being washed some areas of soiling can be seen on the front and back numbers. Some dark transfer marks and abrasions from contact appear on the lettering and numerals on the top and back right shoulder. Polamalu has autographed the back number in black marker.
Provenance: This 2009 Troy Polamalu Steelers gamer was given to John Hamilton for inclusion in the Newport Sports Museum by Polamalus brother-in law Alex Holmes. Holmes was Polamalus teammate at USC and played for two years in the NFL with Miami and St. Louis. Holmes' younger sister is married to Troy Polamalu.
