Yankee Stadium the 85-year-old baseball cathedral synonymous with the game's biggest names and iconic moments dimmed its lights for good on Sept. 21st 2008 amid a flood of memories and emotion. The stadium was nicknamed "The House That Ruth Built" in homage to Babe Ruth upon its opening in 1923. The so-called "cathedral of baseball" with its famous 12ft high letters spelling out its name went on to become home to 26 World Series-winning teams. As its final season wound down the enthusiasm of souvenir hunters was understandable given the unique place the stadium holds in American sports history. Offered here is one of the more prominent artifacts extracted from the hallowed ballpark in its final days. This is the actual game used Yankee Stadium home plate from September 18 2008. The game saw the Yankees defeat the Chicago White Sox 9-2 with a home run hit by Paul Konerko and two by Bobby Abreau. The heavy rubber plate shows appropriate usage wear and plenty of traces of original Yankee Stadium dirt. A strip of masking tape affixed to the outer front edge reads 9/18/08 Main Field Home Plate. It has been authenticated by Major League Baseball and Steiner Sports and bears holograms from both agencies. Accompanying COAs from MLB and Steiner are included. This significant Yankee Stadium artifact utilized just three days prior to the final game ever played there has excellent display quality.
