Three years after breaking the 86-year "Curse of the Bambino", the Boston Red Sox won the 2007 World Series for their second championship in four seasons. Perennial All-Stars David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez along with veteran catcher Jason Varitek remained staples in their everyday lineup; however, the 2007 roster looked very different. The only starting pitchers left in the rotation were ageless wonders Curt Schilling and Tim Wakefield. The front office made a pivotal trade in 2005, sending Hanley Ramirez and other prospects to Miami for Josh Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell. It paid off in 2007 as Beckett went 20-7 to finish 2nd in Cy Young voting, while Lowell had his finest MLB season (.324 BA, 21 HR, 120 RBI). Sox fans fell in love with newcomers such as Japanese starter Daisuke Matsuzaka ("Dice-K") and 23-year-old second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who was named AL Rookie of the Year.
Boston finished atop the AL East with a 96-66 record. In the ALDS, the Red Sox swept the Angels before ousting Cleveland in the ALCS, coming back from a 3–1 deficit to win three straight elimination games. In the 2007 Fall Classic, the Red Sox swept the NL champion Colorado Rockies to complete another dream season. The bullpen played a major role in earning their seventh World Series title in franchise history. Fans will long remember Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon doing his wacky Irish dancing jig in celebration.
Presented here is a rarely seen 2007 Boston Red Sox World Series player ring awarded to relief pitcher Brendan Donnelly. The 6' 3" righty, known for his goggles and colorful demeanor on the mound, was instrumental for the 2002 Anaheim Angels during their championship run, serving as the set-up man for closer Troy Percival. Unfortunately, his 2007 season in Boston was cut short due to injury, leading to Tommy John surgery in August. To our knowledge, the only other 2007 Red Sox player’s ring to sell publicly was Royce Clayton’s in 2015.
This spectacular ring made of 18-karat white gold features “WORLD CHAMPIONS" around the face and the Red Sox logo at center crafted in red stones. The two socks sit atop a baseball diamond-shaped bed of 10 diamonds with a blue stone backdrop. Encircling the crown are 28 smaller diamonds. One shank has "DONNELLY" in raised relief above the Red Sox logo, the Commissioner's trophy, “53" (uniform number) and "2007”. The other shank reads “7th World Series Championship” above a sculpted rendering of Fenway Park with “4-0 Sweep”. The interior band is stamped "Boston Red Sox" and "10-28-07" (date of World Series Game 4 clincher), along with the "© JOSTENS 18K" hallmark. The size 12.5 ring weighs 77 grams and remains in wonderful NM-MT condition.
Comes in its original wooden presentation box (4” x 6½” x 7½”) with a “2007 WORLD CHAMPIONS" embossed window, inlaid 2007 World Series logo, and "Brendan Donnelly / 2007" plaque. Original cardboard box for wooden box also included. LOA from Donnelly verifying this as his one and only 2007 World Series ring.
