Already known as a scrappy and well-respected ballplayer in his playing days, Joe Torre found even more success as a big-league manager. After cutting his teeth with dugout stints on the Mets, Braves and Cardinals, he reached the pinnacle of his career once he took the helm with the New York Yankees in 1996. Torre brought championship baseball back to the Bronx, winning four World Series in a five-year span and six AL pennants overall during his 12-year tenure.
This classic Yankees home jersey was donned by Joe Torre on Opening Day of the 2004 season. The Yankees played the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at the Tokyo Dome in Japan on March 30, 2004, in what was the MLB's first official game that year. Resolution Photomatching has definitively matched this jersey to photos and film of the March 30th game in Tokyo. The white jersey with navy pinstripes shows light wear appropriate for single-game usage. The iconic Yankees intertwined “NY” appears on the left chest in navy tackle twill with the Russell Athletic label on left front tail. Japanese company Ricoh was the official title sponsor of the 3/30/2004 game in Tokyo, and its logo patch is sewn on the right sleeve. Torre’s number “6” is sewn on the back in navy blue tackle twill. The Hall of Fame skipper has signed and dated the front of the jersey just below the “NY” in blue marker with ""Game one 3/30/04" inscribed.
