Featured here is an Olympic gold medal from the 2004 Summer Games in Athens presented to a member the Chinese women's volleyball team. China defeated Russia in the final to become Olympic Champions for the 2nd time. The front of the medal depicts the Greek goddess Nike (also known as the Winged Goddess of Victory) who personified victory with Panathenaic Stadium in the background and "28th Olympiad China 2004" lettered in Greek. The back of the medal features the Olympic flame the opening lines of Pindar's Eighth Olympic Ode (in Greek) the Athens Games logo and an engraved Greek inscription at the very bottom that translates to "Women Volleyball." The medal which is actually made of gilt silver (as are all gold medals produced after 1912) measures 2 1/4" in diameter and presents in NM-MT condition. It is suspended by an Athens 2004 medal ribbon and comes in its original Athens 2004 presentation case with the Olympic logo on the lid which slides open from the side. Although the recipient is unknown the medal survives as an extraordinary Olympic artifact the likes of which are rarely made available to the collecting public.
