For the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Games a team of designers and engineers from Georgia Tech was asked to help design the Olympic Torch. The Olympic committee for SLOC had chosen a very unique and symbolic form for the torch. It incorporated a glass crown and tapered body with vines that symbolized a frozen icily for the winter games. Thus the team at Georgia Tech was faced with many new and interesting challenges of designing a working torch that could withstand tough environmental conditions. The torch is made of the following key elements: lightweight glass (symbolizing winter and ice); old silver (the West flowing water); very shiny silver (the heart the speed of the athletes) and copper (fire passion the history of Utah). It was designed in the shape of a stalactite to symbolize winter sports and the theme chosen for these Games "Light the Fire Within". The silver grooves of the torch are evocative of the texture of pure ice. For the first time the Olympic flame was made to spring up through a frosted glass orifice thus symbolizing the flame which burned within each one of the runners. The offered original 2002 Olympic torch measures 32 inches in length and includes an expertly crafted Lucite and wood wall mount with a carved wooden figural flame support. Printed data on the lucite portion describes the elemental design themes of the torch along with the Salt lake Olympic logo and Olympic rings.

Includes a letter of provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
