Baseball Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson was a well-traveled player who had speed beyond belief. Playing for a total of nine different clubs during the course of his 25-year MLB career Henderson racked up several league longevity records. But in 1991 the speedster broke Lou Brock’s longstanding MLB career stolen bases record by swiping his 939th steal on May 1. Always known as a base-stealing threat Henderson ended his career with 1406 stolen bases and still remains at the top in that category even 14 years after retirement.
This lot features Henderson’s 2002 autographed and game worn Boston Red Sox road uniform plus his cap. He played for the Red Sox that season at the age of 43 and collected 40 more hits and eight more stolen bases. The gray road jersey which shows moderate wear reads “BOSTON” across the front in red tackle twill outlined in navy blue and includes the proper Russell Athletic MLB Authentic Collection manufacturer’s tag on the left front tail. Two additional flag tags are located adjacent to the manufacturers’ tag and read “100% POLYESTER” and “2002” respectively. The back of the jersey includes “HENDERSON” arched across the shoulders in red tackle twill outlined in navy blue on a sewn-on gray polyester nameplate. His uniform number “35” appears below his name in like tackle twill fashion. There is noticeable fraying of the letters of his name as well as his number. Some puckering also exists. Henderson signed the back of the jersey in black marker and added both his uniform number “35” and the season “2002.” The official MLB red white and blue embroidered patch appears on the rear outside collar. The right sleeve includes a sewn-on black armband and the number “9” which was done in tribute to fallen Red Sox great Ted Williams who passed away on July 5 2002.
The accompanying gray polyester pants show solid wear with coffee and/or dirt stains littered across the thighs. Proper Russell Athletic tagging [size 34] appears on the inside rear waistband with washing instructions reflected. To the left of that is a sewn-on white tag that reads “HENDERSON - 34/36 - 34 02.” To the right of the tag is a flag tag that reads “100%POLYESTER H-CUT.” Henderson has signed the upper left thigh area and date it “7/30/02.” The last piece to this ensemble is Henderson’s game worn and autographed 2002 Red Sox cap. The New Era size 7 ¼ navy blue cap which features the team’s “B” embroidered in red and outlined in white shows good wear on the inside front and includes Henderson’s signature in silver on the top of the bill along with “2002.” His uniform number “35” appears on the inside of the bill in black marker.
Includes 3 Man of Steel COA's signed by Rickey Henderson for each article. Autographs pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
