The 2001 season was the last in the storied career of Mark McGwire. While he watched his short-lived single season home run record topple in the waning days of the '01 season McGwire still left behind a statistical legacy that is unique on many fronts. Having retired with 583 career circuit clouts McGwire hit the fewest triples (six) of any player with over 5000 at-bats. But that's not to say he didn't contribute in the extra-base hit category as just 48 percent of his lifetime safeties were singles! Here offered is a St. Louis Cardinals home jersey signed and worn by "Big Mac" during the latter part of his 2001 swan song campaign. This white knit button-down garment features the club's script-style "Cardinals" name embroidered across the chest in red-on-blue characters with the famed birds-and-bat logo stitched just above. In red-on-blue double tackle twill "25" is sewn to the back and left front with "McGWIRE" arched on a name plate atop the number on the back. At the base of the neckline an American flag patch is sewn over an MLB silhouette logo dating the jersey to post-9/11. (During that stretch McGwire went 8-for-45 with five home runs.) McGwire's blue Sharpie signature on the front shows "9-10" strength. Inside the front tail a Rawlings manufacturer's label is accompanied by flag tags that respectively denote size "52" "SET 1 - 2001" and "PLUS 2 INCH BODY & SLEEVE LENGTH." Significant game use is evident from areas of soiling on the middle and lower front as well as the right sleeve.
Holograms from MLB Auth. (MT 00441473) and Steiner Sports for the autograph appear on the outer front tail with an additional Steiner hologram on the interior tagging. Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
