Before the 2001 season, Derek Jeter signed a contract to stay with the Yankees that made him the second-highest paid player in the game. In the 2001 season, Jeter earned every penny of it, hitting .311 with 21 home runs and 27 stolen bases. As good as that was, Jeter really earned his paycheck with a single play in the ALDS against Oakland. With Jeremy Giambi at first base and the Yanks up by a single run, Terrance Long hit a long fly ball into the right field corner. As Giambi trudged around bases to score what looked to be the tying run, Yankee right fielder Shane Spencer unleashed a wild throw that missed his cut off man. As the ball skimmed down the first base line, Jeter seemingly came out of nowhere, retrieved the ball and flipped it to catcher Jorge Posada who slapped the tag on a surprised Giambi. This unbelievable play went down in baseball history as simply “The Flip”.This game-worn navy mock-turtle undershirt dates to Jeter’s 2001 season. The front has the Nike Jordan logo embroidered in white and Jeter has signed the left front chest in silver marker. The Nike XL label is sewn inside the collar. The undershirt shows light game use with some loose threads throughout. A Steiner hologram is affixed below Jeter’s signature. This lot is accompanied by a full LOA from Beckett Authentication Servicse, a Steiner COA and Jeter LOA.
