From 1975 until his tragic death at Daytona in 2001, Dale Earnhardt Sr. and his number 3 car was the face of NASCAR. Known around the circuit as “The Intimidator,” Earnhardt had become a fan favorite through his aggressive driving and long trail of first place trophies. His namesake son was inspired to follow in his father’s footsteps and the two were competing at the 2001 Daytona 500 when tragedy struck. Going into the final turn of the last lap, Dale Jr., and Darrell Waltrip were in the lead with Dale Sr. in the third spot. Sterling Marlin attempted to break into the lead pack but was blocked by Dale Sr. Then, Senior’s number 3 car made contact with Marlin’s car, triggering a series of spins and car collisions that concluded with Dale Sr’s. car hitting the wall head-on. The Man in Black was pronounced dead at the hospital. This perfectly framed action shot taken earlier during the "Black Sunday at Daytona,” captures Dale Earnhardt Sr. in his famous number 3 car passing the star driver of NASCAR’s new generation, Jeff Gordon. The Type 1 photo measures 8" x 10" and has been printed to its edges. The reverse of the photo has the Agfa paper watermark and digital codes. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
