This San Diego Padres home jersey, bearing an All-Star Game patch on the sleeve, was worn by Trevor Hoffman during the 2000 season and, according to the provenance, in the MLB All-Star Game played at Turner Field in Atlanta. That season, the legendary closer earned his third All-Star selection while continuing a dominant run as one of the best closers in baseball. His 43 saves made it four straight seasons of 40+ saves and he finished with a sub 3.00 ERA for the fifth straight campaign. In the Midsummer Classic hosted by the Braves, Hoffman came on in the ninth inning with the NL already behind 3-2, allowing three runs in his one inning of work. Our San Diego-based consignor has close ties with the Padres organization and acquired this jersey directly from the team.
The front of the white knit pinstriped shirt has the "Padres" logo across the chest in navy blue and orange tackle twill. In addition to a 2000 ASG patch on the right sleeve, a Padres team crest patch adorns the left sleeve. Properly tagged by Russell Athletic, a size 48 tag hangs inside the collar ad an additional manufcturer's label is sewn to the front left tail. No year or set tag is present as is standard with Padres home jerseys from this era (per Bill Henderson's Game Worn Guide to MLB Jerseys). The back of the jersey displays "HOFFMAN" in navy blue above his famous number "51" – now retired by the club. Trevor has autographed the '1' with "HOF 18" insribed in the '5' in silver marker in reference to his 2018 Baseball Hall of Fame induction. The jersey exhibits evidenve of moderate wear and appears to have been washed post-use.
Hoffman would go on to retire as the game's all-time saves leader at the time of his departure from the sport (before Mo Rivera passed him), a mark he built almost entirely across his years anchoring the Padres bullpen, and his 2000 All-Star campaign fell squarely within his prime. ACDC's "Hells Bells" will forever be linked to the legendary closer's memorable entrance out of the Padres bullpen under dimmed lights and fire-themed visual effects at Petco Park. The autograph has been certifed by Steve Grad of GRAD Authentication.
