Featured here are two programs and a PSA graded ticket stub featuring the greatest rivalry of big men in basketball history. Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain faced each other 94 times over their respective careers. Each player is a member of the Naismith Hall of Fame with 13 NBA titles between them (11 for Russell). Every time they played against each other, it was an absolute treat for spectators.
In the 1961-62 season, The Big Dipper averaged 25.7 rebounds and a career-high 50.4 points per game Yes, The Stilt put up half a century each night! Of course, his most famous performance that season came on March 2nd in Hershey, PA, when actually did reach the century mark. Russell, meanwhile, tallied a respectable 18.9 ppg and grabbed 23.6 boards along with 4.5 assists for his World Champion Celtics. Boston played Philadelphia 12 times that season, winning the first six and the final two meetings. The Warriors won four in a row, but that was it. Wilt played in all 12 matchups but Bill missed two of them due to injury, both of which were wins for the Warriors. On January 27th, Wilt slightly exceeded his season averages with 53 and 27 in a 25-point blowout at Convention Hall that ended the Celtics' six-game win streak against Philadelphia on the season. The very next night at the Boston Garden, The Stilt went for 50 and 20 for another Philly victory in Russell's absence. When the two centers squared off on February 24th in Philadelphia, Russell was ready and he shut down Chamberlain, if you will, to the tune of 26 points on 46% from the floor and 4-13 from the foul line. (Wilt did have 31 rebounds.) Bill scored just 11 points, but he only ever cared about the final score and the Celtics stonewalled the Warriors 109-86 that evening.
The ticket stub from 2/24/1962 is graded by VG-EX 4 by PSA. It is the only ticket (full or stub) from that game ever encapsulated by PSA,; thus, it could be the only one that survived. Torn in half, the rest of the yellow cardboard remains sharp, smooth and clean (front and back) with bold print. The program from that same game is in outstanding shape with no major issues other than slight paper loss on the font cover near the top right edge from something adhesive. The program from the January 27, 1962 game is in terrific condition as well with very light toning on the front cover and a little paper loss on the upper left corner. Both 35-cent programs have virtually identical looking covers--the only difference being the game dates--with Bob Cousy throwing one of his patented behind-the-back passes. Neither program has any noticeable creases or badly damaged areas. All pages inside are clean and intact.
The 1/27/62 program is unscored and has absolutely no writing on any pages inside. The 2/24/62 program is also unscored, although the previous owner--an obvious Philly fan--has comically added his personal opinions of several players next to their names in blue pen ("is good" to most Warriors and "is lousy" next to both Russell and Cousy). Two great examples of early basketball programs commemorating hardwood legends. Philadelphia newspaper cut-out with article and box score from the 1/27/62 game is included.
