Certainly one of the most colorful and controversial players of his era Jose Canseco turned in his greatest home run season 1998 for the Toronto Blue Jays socking a career-high 46 and knocking in 107 runs. His heroics may have been overlooked by a general public smitten with the avalanche of home runs conjured up that goofy summer by Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa but not by the good folks at Hillerich & Bradsby Co. in Louisville Kentucky makers of so many of the bats used in the major leagues then and now. For his last great offensive season Canseco won the Hillerich & Bradsby Silver Slugger Award presented every year to the top offensive performers at each position in both leagues. Offered here is the actual award from his personal collection the last of four Silver Sluggers that he won in his career. The 34-inch silver bat dominates a presentation that features a 23-inch high wooden stand and backdrop. A 7-inch silver-and-black oval replicating the Louisville Slugger center-brand bat label sits atop the backdrop; at the center is a 7-by-9-inch silver plaque that reads: "Hillerich & Bradsby Co. Silver Slugger Award presented to Jose Canseco - DH Toronto Blue Jays Member of the Sporting News American League Offensive Team 1998." Below that the plaque lists the names and positions of the eight other AL recipients. The wood base of 11 inches across and 9 inches back to front is designed like roughly 1/2 of home plate. All of the silver elements of the award seem to be in essentially as-issued and problem-free condition; the wood base and backdrop show some scratches most notably a 1-inch-by-1/2-inch section at the base of the backdrop. This is an important award from one of the great sluggers of his era who also happened to be a best-selling author and lightning rod for much of the modern debate about steroid use.
