In just his second NBA season 1998-99 San Antonio center Tim Duncan led the Spurs to the team's first NBA title. A resounding four-games-to-one thrashing of the Eastern Conference Champion New York Kicks in the NBA Finals cemented Duncan's ever-growing legacy. During the regular season that year the Wake Forest standout led the Spurs in both scoring (21.7 points per game) and rebounding (11.4 per game) and firmly established himself as a force to be reckoned with. In the five-game series versus the Knicks Duncan's light shined bright as he averaged 27.4 points 14 rebounds and 2.4 assist per outing. To no one's surprise the 22-year-old phenom was named NBA Finals MVP.
This lot features a pair of Duncan's autographed and game-worn Nike Zoom Air Up-tempo shoes from that memorable season. The tri-color (black white and gray) size 18 shoes show solid game usage and both have been signed by Duncan in blue fine point marker on the top of the toe area. He added "#21" to reflect his uniform number after both signatures. The original black laces are present. The cushioning material around the Nike Air pocket at the midsole has started to crumble but all sections remain intact and as-issued. Nike tagging exists inside both shoes and shows the manufacturing date to be "981202" or Dec. 2 1998. The pair was sourced from a collector who hails from Texas. Duncan now has five NBA titles to his credit but this pair of shoes represented the start of big things to come.
