The 1994 FIFA World Cup was the first held on U.S. soil and came down to a memorable Final between two world soccer powers. On July 17th at the Rose Bowl (Pasadena, CA), Brazil and Italy played to a scoreless tie before Seleção prevailed on penalties (3-2) for their unprecedented fourth world title. Led by star midfielder Dunga (team captain) and the lethal striker combination of Romario and Bebeto, Brazil cruised through the group stage before winning close matches in the knockout rounds and sweating through a tight Final. It was Bebeto who tallied the only goal in Brazil's 1-0 victory over over the U.S. in group play on July 4th, punctuated with his patented "baby-carrying" celebration.
Featured here is a 1994 Brazil National Team World Cup jersey worn by Bebeto. The yellow with a green collar has the CBF (Brazil Football Confederation) emblem triple screen printed in orange on the front with the traditional CBF crest sewn on the left chest. Apparel maker/sponsor Umbro is sewn on the right chest in green. His NOB ("BEBETO") and jersey number "7" (front and back) are applied in green felt. The size tag has worn beyond legibility. MEARS has authenticated the shirt and describes the wear as "heavy" with significant pilling to the fabric. Jersey shows signs of repeated laundering. The exact match in which Bebeto wore this shirt is unknown and, based on our research, we can confirm that Brazil wore this same style in all seven of their World Cup games in the USA as well as multiple '94 WC qualifying matches prior to the tournament. Includes LOA from MEARS.
