Magic Johnson thought he'd never play in the NBA again after being diagnosed with HIV after the 1990-91 season. Little was still known of the disease and the stigma surrounding it made for a difficult decision for both the league and Magic to hang up his sneakers. During Magic's 4 year hiatus before his triumphant comeback during the 1995-96 season, Johnson would begin a mission to educate the world about HIV. Part of that mission included an amazing partnership with Pepsi and The Red Cross who would put together a European tour to help Magic get the word out about the disease and how to prevent it's spread. Part of getting the word out across Europe involved organizing some basketball games and Magic would bring with him a group of travelling "Pepsi Legends" to play with him against European national teams.
The Pepsi Legends team included Moses Malone, Alex English, Kyle Macy and Marques Johnson plus a Brazilian star, Oscar Schmidt. The elder (35+ year old) team would put on a show agains their European foes for a couple weeks in May of 1993. One of those meetings was against the Dutch National Team in Amsterdam and is the origination of the offered game worn and signed Magic Johnson jersey. The Converse XXLARGE jersey features Magic's "32" in blue print above a very large "PEPSI LEGEND TEAM" logo that's pressed onto the jersey. The Converse tag features the "FIBA" Logo and "Official shoe and clothing of F.I.B.A." Magic's autograph is in very large blue sharpie across the chest of the jersey and includes, "#32" from the showman. The reverse features Magic's "32" in large blue print below another "PEPSI" logo that's pressed on. The jersey shows good use with some light puckering and some mild stains across the bottom on the reverse side. An outstanding and extraordinarily rare offering of one of the Pepsi Legend jerseys. Accompanied by a Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services and a Letter from the Netherlands Basketball Federation.
