Presented here is the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics second place winner's silver medal presented to Cuban boxer Raúl González. Competing in the Flyweight division (51 kg), González won five straight bouts before succumbing to Choi Choi-Su of North Korea in the Olympic final. Made entirely of gilt silver, it measures 70 mm in diameter and weighs 275 grams (ribbon included). The designer was Xavier Corberó and it was minted by Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre. The obverse shows a seated Victory in Modernist style holding a winner’s crown and palm branch with Olympic rings and "XXV Olimpiada Barcelona 1992” in raised text. The reverse features the ’92 Games legend of a stylized man leaping over the Olympic rings. The original striped ribbon in Olympic colors remains attached in outstanding condition. This medal was sourced from a Cuban collector who procured it directly from Raúl González. ‘92 Summer Olympics winners’ medals are notoriously prone to tarnishing and oxidation despite being only three decades old, yet this example has been remarkably well-preserved and maintains its shiny silver glow with just minor handling evident.
The 1992 Summer Olympics were the last Games to be held the same year as the Winter Olympics. In the wake of the Soviet Union’s dissolution in 1991 marking the end of the Cold War, the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania sent their own teams for the first time since 1936, with the twelve other former Soviet republics competing as the Unified Team. The release of Nelson Mandela and the end of Apartheid allowed South Africa to make its first Olympic appearance since 1950. One of the highlights was USA Basketball's "Dream Team" which created a media frenzy in the coastal Catalan city unlike any other. In boxing, Oscar De La Hoya won gold in the Lightweight division.
