Featured here is a 1992 Barcelona SummerOlympics torch used in the relay. The 1992 Summer Games torch relaybegan in Olympia Greece carrying the Olympic flame 6307 km over 51days to the host city in the Catalan region of Spain. 8885torchbearers ran with the flame in Spain and a total of 6500 torcheswere produced according to the Olympic Museum website. Beginning in1994 the International Olympic Committee decided to alternate theSummer and Winter Games every two years making Barcelona the lastSummer Games to take place the same year as the Winter Olympics. It wasalso the first Games unaffected by boycotts since 1972. The U.S. Men'sBasketball "Dream Team" was one of the biggest stories at Barcelonafeaturing a team of NBA superstars for the first time that dominated thecompetition en route to the gold medal.
Designed by AndréRicard and manufactured by Kromschröder the torch is made ofchrome-plated aluminum and plastic. It measures 67 cm (26") long and theround platform on top is 17.5 cm (6.75") in diameter. The silverstem/handle has "XXV OLIMPIADA BARCELONA 1992" scripted in gold-platingwith the Barcelona Games emblem. The circular shape of the upper sectionis supposed to resemble a cauldron while the conical and triangularshapes recall an amphora and the Latin sail to give it a moreMediterranean character. The torch was presented to us as used although shows little sign of being lit on the top flame section. The black handle grip areaat the bottom end shows moderate handling. The chrome shaft maintains a beautiful shine. Overallthe torch presents nicely in NM-MT condition.
Included is the official Barcelona torch relay uniform with obvious wear: a tight-fitting singlet (size L) and zipper down running/biking shirt (size M) both made in Spain by Zito Sportswear.
