Named after the family that for generations has had so much to do with racing at Saratoga the Whitney Handicap was first run in 1928. Prior to 1954 the Whitney was run at 1 ¼ miles as a weight-for-age event and from 1957-69 it was restricted to 4-year-olds and up. Beginning in 1955 it was run at its current distance of 1 1/8 miles. This lot features the 1986 Whitney Saratoga winner’s trophy dish cover and serving plate which was awarded to “Lady’s Secret” with owner Eugene V. Klein in tow. The entrée dish and cover were made out of old American silver by William Forbes and produced by Ball Tompkins & Black. The one-handled serving dish and cover measure 12” wide by five inches high and together weigh three pounds. The accompanying serving tray has the sterling silver lion's symbol on the bottom and measures 15” wide by 11” deep by one inch high weighing over two and half pounds (1204g).
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
