The 1986 World Series which pitted the American League Champion Boston red Sox against the national League Champion New York Mets will go down as one of the greatest MLB series ever played. After the Red Sox went up two games to none the Mets battled back to knot the series after four games. After taking Game 5 the Red Sox were on the verge of winning it all in Game 6 with a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the 10th inning at Shea Stadium two outs and nobody on for the Mets. And that’s when everything came crashing down for Boston. The Mets miraculously suddenly got four straight hits and score one run. They they scored a second run on a wild pitch by Boston’s Bob Stanley and then won the game when Mookie Wilson’s slow dribbler up the first base side somehow got through first baseman Bill Buckner’s legs allowing Ray Knight to score from second with the winning run. The Mets then closed out the series in Game 7 with an 8-5 victory.
This lot features an official 1986 World Series Baseball that’s been signed by 31 members of the New York Mets team from that incredible season starting with Manager Davey Johnson across the sweet spot. Other notable signatures in blue ink include Knight Wilson Gary Carter Darryl Strawberry Doc Gooden Keith Hernandez Lenny Dykstra Wally Backman Bobby Ojeda and Jesse Orosco. A great piece of baseball history that commemorates one of the most exciting World Series ever played.
