This original 1986-87 World Champions banner from the Great Western Forum is a primary artifact from the most storied franchise in NBA history at the pinnacle of its greatest dynasty. The 1986-87 Lakers — Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, Byron Scott, and one of the deepest rosters in league history — won the NBA championship by defeating the Boston Celtics in the Finals, completing the defining rivalry of the decade and delivering a championship that is widely considered the high-water mark of the Showtime era.
Championship banners are among the rarest and most impactful physical artifacts in professional sports. Unlike rings, which are produced in quantities of 50 or more, championship banners are produced in a very limited number and are displayed permanently in the arena rafters — which is why the appearance of an original Forum banner at auction is an event of genuine significance. The Forum was the Lakers' home from 1967 through 1999, the arena where Magic and Kareem built the Showtime dynasty, where five championships were celebrated, and where the most glamorous audience in American sports gathered for three decades to witness one of the game's great teams.
The 1986-87 championship is specifically significant within the Lakers' banner history for several reasons. It was the first of Magic Johnson's back-to-back championship victories (the 1987-88 title followed), the year Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — the all-time NBA scoring leader — added his sixth and final ring, and the season that saw the Lakers dismantle the Celtics in the Finals for the first time since 1985 — completing a rivalry defined by bitter losses and delivering the definitive Showtime statement. For the NBA historian and the serious collector, the 1987 championship is the one that defined the era.
Forum banners have not regularly appeared at auction. The dissolution of the Forum's operational history as a Lakers venue — the team moved to Staples Center in 1999 — created the conditions under which such items might eventually emerge, but the rarity of their appearance at public sale confirms that these pieces were preserved by those who understood their significance.
