The American Thoroughbread was bought by San Diego Chargers owner Gene Klein in 1983 and named after former NFL runningback and Chargers executive Tank Younger. At the age of two he won his first start at Santa Anita and then finished second in the inaugural Breeder's Cup Juvenile. From there Tank's Prospect worked his way up to the 1985 Kentucky Derby where he placed seventh. In that year's Preakness Pat Day rode Tank's Prospect to a first place finish with a time of 1:53.4 a record at the time. In the third leg of the Triple Crown Tank's Prospect's career ended when he suffered and injury in the top of the stretch at Belmont. The Preakness champ was put out to stud and one of his offsprings Real Cash went on to win both the American Derby and San Felipe Stakes.

Tank's Prospect donned this black saddle blanket during his record-setting run at the '85 Preakness. The blanket measures 42” x 46”. Both sides have “PREAKNESS” in 3” yellow tackle twill letters below a 10” number “6” Tank’s Prospect’s number in the Preakness. The blanket is in very good condition with light fraying on the tackle twill letters.

This piece includes a signed letter of provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
