Featured here is a 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics torch used in the relay. The Olympic flame began in Olympia Greece and traveled 5289 km (900 km by torchbearers and the rest by vehicle) before arriving in Sarajevo after an 11-day journey. The host nation formerly known as Yugoslavia had a total of 1600 torchbearers. The 1984 Sarajevo Olympics were the first Winter Games held in a Communist country. Manufactured by Nippon Koki Co. and Mizuno Corporation the torch is composed of metal and wood and comes in two parts with a gold and silver colored base bowl (handle) and a stainless steel cylinder. The bowl has "Sarajevo '84" and an "M" (for Mizuno) inscribed on the gold platform with "MIZUNO CORPORATION JAPAN" engraved on the very bottom of the handle. The 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games emblem appears on the cylinder where the burnt darkening begins. At the lower end of the cylinder (hidden from view when inserted into the bowl) is "SPECIALLY MANUFACTURED BY NIPPON KOKI CO. UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF MIZUNO CORPORATION" in black lettering that has started to rub off. The torch stands 57 cm (22.5") tall and weighs 1.5 lbs. The bowl comes in great shape with just few nicks on the edge its platform. The cylinder is slightly bent due to a dent just below the red ring marker (the point where it rests in the bowl) giving the torch a bit of a "Leaning Tower of Pisa" look. While these imperfections may detract from its overall appearance the torch still presents beautifully in EX condition and represents one of the last symbols of peace and unity within a war-torn Yugoslavia now divided into several independent and rival nations.
