In mid-1984 Cleveland traded a struggling Rick Sutcliffe to the Chicago Cubs for Mel Hall and Joe Carter. Sutcliffe caught fire and the Cubbies did too as he won 16 games while losing only one helping them to the division championship. On October 2 1984 he started the first game of the NLCS against the San Diego Padres giving up two hits and no runs not only gaining the victory but also hitting a home run in the third inning. Sutcliffe won the Cy Young Award with a unanimous vote beating out Dwight Gooden and Bruce Sutter. He also finished fourth in the league MVP voting. He retired with a career record of 171–139 and holds the unique distinction of having won each of the following league awards: Rookie of the Year (1979) Cy Young Award (1984) ERA leader (1982) and wins leader (1987). Featured here is Sutciliffe's classic Cubbies pinstriped home uniform from that Cy Young Award-winning campaign/

Inside the collar of the jersey is the Size 48 “Wilson” manufacturer’s tag; below is a strip tag with “40 84 / 48.” At the left chest is the team large “CUBS” patch done in red white and blue embroidery. On back is player number “40” done in blue tackle twill. On the left sleeve is the team “Cub Head” patch. A small "84" tag appears on the lower front tail. The jersey is properly tagged and shows significant wear and soiling in the knit fabric. The matching pinstriped pants are a wonderful complement showing even more game use and remaining problem free. The Size 35 Wilson tag appears at the back of the waistband alongside a white felt strip tag with "40 84 3 35 28" (uniform number year set width length). The zipper (working) and two-snap pants have two handwritten marker notations of "Hector" on the inside of the back pockets meaning these were likely worn by Cubs utility player Hector Cruz prior to Sutcliffe's arrival (many pants were transitional and carried over in that era).

Includes a letter of provenance from the Newport Sports Museum where it was displayed for many several years until 2014. (It should be noted that SCP originally sold this uniform for $5948.)
