The City of Los Angeles hosted the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. This lot includes a pair of items commemorating those Summer Games in the City of Angels: a games-used relay torch as well as a commemorative metal plaque that was awarded to the citizens of San Diego who participated in the Olympic torch relay.

The torch measures 23 inches in length with the "bowl" 5 inches in diameter and featuring the Olympic motto in Latin on the edge along with the five rings and intricate engraving of the L.A. Coliseum encircling the bowl. A tan leather wrap covers the handle nearly to the end save only for a brass fitting at the end with the LA Olympic logo; a second brass fitting three quarters of the way up the handle has an engraving that reads "Games of the XXIIIrd Olympiad Los Angeles 1984." The torch certainly shows that it was used to carry a flame.

The metal plaque meanwhile measures 24” wide by 16” high and is engraved with the following text: “OLYMPIC TORCH Presented to the San Diego City Council and the Citizens of San Diego on behalf of your Olympic Torch Relay runners and the Telephone Pioneers of America who took the Olympic flame through San Diego in July 1984 as it headed toward Los Angeles and the opening of the games of the XXIIIrd Olympiad on July 28 1984. May the spirt live on…” It includes the AT&T Sponsor logo at the bottom along with the date of the Olympic Torch Relay: July 23 1984. The oversized metal plaque weighs a hefty 24 pounds.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
