One can’t think of the 1980s Boston Red Sox without remembering Oil Can Boyd with a smile. Earning his nickname from his enjoyment of beer which was called “oil” back in his hometown of Meridian, Miss., Boyd debuted with the Red Sox in 1982 and quickly established himself as one of their most dependable starters, teaming with Roger Clemens to form one of the best one-two punches in the American League. In 1984, the season he wore this road uniform, Boyd won 12 games for Boston while striking out 134. The greatest season of his 10-year career would be two years later when he won 16 games to help power the Sox to the 1986 World Series.Boyd’s classic 1984 Red Sox road uniform shows oustanding game use. The jersey is covered in turf stains and perspiration marks, just what you'd expect from a player with his nickname. “BOSTON” is arched across the chest in navy blue tackle twill with a Wilson size 38 label affixed to the lower left front tail along with an “84” strip tag. The Can has signed and inscribed the right front area in black marker. The back of the jersey has Boyd’s “23” in navy tackle twill. The accompanying pants show the same amount of heavy wear. A Wilson size 28 tag is in the waistband flanked by a “23 26” strip tag on one side and a “84” year strip tag on the right. Both items are all-original and would grade high from MEARS (lots of photo-match potential, too). You couldn't ask for a more ideal Oil Can Boyd gamer than this.
