Most 1986-87 Fleer Basketball rookie cards, including Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, were preceded by true debut RCs from little known Star Company, which distributed their product in 12-card team sets that came sealed in plastic bags. Featured here is a wonderful, hobby-fresh 1984-85 Star Co. Basketball complete set of 288 cards well-preserved in mostly EX-MT to NM-MT condition, including a few outliers slightly better or worse. Estimated production numbers for Star’s second ever issue was 3,000 for each team set, according to Star’s original order form, making it among the scarcest sets from the early-modern era in existence.
From the beginning, collectors have chased the Chicago Bulls team bag set with the coveted #101 Michael Jordan XRC as its value continues to rise (a PSA NM-MT 8 recently sold for $133k at auction). Since the mid-1980s, our consignor built this offered set from scratch either by breaking open team bags or acquiring the cards raw. We submitted five to PSA recently. The #101 MJ received a very nice NM 7 grade, held back only by its slight off-cen. Barkley’s true #202 rookie was graded NM-MT 8, Akeem Olajuwon’s #237 XRC got EX-MT 6, and Jordan’s other two rookie cards – 1985 Rookie of the Year (#288) and 1984 Gold Medalist (#195) – were each given EX 5 grades.
Other highlights include #’s 1 Larry Bird, 2 Danny Ainge, 9 Kevin McHale, 12 Larry Bird (MVP), 22 Bill Walton, 76 Dominique Wilkins, 172 Magic Johnson, 173 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, 201 Moses Malone, 204 Julius Erving, and 235 John Stockton XRC. We have included images of several of these ungraded notables. This is the finest ’84 Star set we’ve ever offered, and many of the other Star singles and rare subsets in this auction come from the same collection.
