The Apple Blossom Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race run each year in early April during the Racing Festival of the South at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs Arkansas. The Grade I race is open to Fillies and Mares four years old and up. A premier event for distaffers in the spring it is run over a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt and currently offers a purse of $600000.This lot features the championship trophy that was awarded in 1983 to race winner “Miss Huntington” which was ridden by jockey Jorge Velasquez.
The date was April 13 1983 and the winning time was 1:44.4. The impressive two-handled trophy stands 17 inches tall is made of sterling silver (hallmarked on bottom) and rests on a two-tiered round wooden black base that measures four inches tall by eight inches wide. The whole trophy with the base weighs over seven pounds; the sterling silver cup alone weighs 1544 grams. The front of the base boats a pair of engraved gold plaques. The first reads: “MISS HUNTINGTON APPLE BLOSSOM HANDICAP GRADE 1.” The second plaque reads as follows: “APRIL 13 1983 - OAKLAWN PARK $250000 ADDED 1 1/16 MILE - 1.44.4 JORGE VELASQUEZ.”
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
