In 1982 the surprising Brewers stormed their way to the top of the American League for their first World Series appearance twelve years after moving to Milwaukee (from Seattle) as the expansion Pilots. Unlike their American League opponents the National League's St. Louis Cardinals were no strangers to postseason play as they prepared to enter their thirteenth Fall Classic. The offered jersey was worn by Cardinals star shortstop Ozzie Smith during the latter part of the 1982 regular season and most likely during the playoffs and thrilling World Series that saw the victorious "Redbirds" emerge with their ninth crown in franchise history.
Ozzie Smiths 1982 St. Louis Cardinals home jersey features a Rawlings manufacturers tag (size 38) and single flag tag for year/set (1982; Set 1) sewn into the front tail. The pullover garment features the "Cardinals" red-on-navy chenille stitched script under a bat with two Cardinals perched on the ends. Smith's number "1" has been sewn on the left front and back in red-on-navy tackle twill. The collar and sleeve openings bear red-white-navy stripe accents. The jersey also features a black band on the left sleeve. The Cardinals started wearing this shortly after September 7th 1982 to honor the passing of Ken Boyer. The Cardinals would continue to wear this armband throughout the post-season to include the 1982 World Series. Ozzie has signed the front of the jersey in black sharpie on the upper right front shoulder area. The jersey exhibits light to medium wear. A few faintly visible stitch holes are visible from the jersey having been formerly affixed in a frame. The jersey has been authenticated by MEARS and graded A9 with a single point deduction resulting from thread holes from prior framing. Totally original and unaltered Ozzie gamer with a high probability of use in the 1982 World Series. LOA from MEARS (A9).
