Offered here is a Tampa Bay Rowdies (NASL) away jersey from a July 28, 1982, exhibition match against São Paulo worn by Argentine midfielder Carlos Babington and preserved in the Oscar Bernardi Collection. Babington had a brief run with the Argentina National Team in the 1970s and later found success in the North American Soccer League alongside other international stars during its celebrated era. After this 1982 exhibition match, he exchanged shirts will his Brazilian rival Oscar who was playing for São Paulo at that time.
The short-sleeve jersey made by Adidas comes in bright green with yellow stripes pattern on the sleeves in the style of the Rowdies' flamboyant NASL kit. It has a yellow turn-down collar and the Adidas Trefoil logo in yellow on the right chest. The team name "ROWDIES" appears gothic-style font across the chest above the number "22" both in white. The reverse has "BABINGTON" above "22" numerals in white. The shirt exhibits displays heavy match use with soil staining on the letters and numbers.
The Oscar Bernardi Collection
This shirt comes from the personal collection of José Oscar Bernardi, better known as Oscar, who played center-back for the Brazil National Team from 1977 to 1986. Included is a letter of provenance signed by Oscar. Most jerseys in the collection were obtained directly through player swaps after competition. Others were acquired via trade with footballers in Oscar’s wide network of teammates and friends. At age 71, he still resides in Brazil and is ready for his collection to be appreciated by others.
