At the beginning of his career at the University of North Carolina Jordan frequently found himself penalized by NCAA refs for traveling. No one had ever witnessed the speed and dexterity exhibited by Jordan and it took legendary coach Dean Smith sending in a videotape of his star shooting guard in action for the NCAA to accept that Jordan was not guilty of a moving violation. The 6' 6" prodigy from Wilmington NC went on to display his revolutionary talent on a national level culminating in his seconds-to-go jump shot that won the NCAA Championship for North Carolina as a freshman in 1982.
Presented here is Michael Jordan’s practice worn UNC jersey worn during his 1981-84 tenure in Chapel Hill. The reversible mesh jersey is Tar Heels baby blue on one side and home white on the other. The blue side has "UNC BASKETBALL” across the chest and “JORDAN 23” on the back in white screen-printed letters. The white side has a blank front and Jordan’s “23” on the back in blue numbers. Both sides display great practice wear by Jordan. The piece comes with a signed letter of provenance from Ralph Meekins who acquired the jersey during his days as the Tar Heels’ student manager of the basketball team. A historically important piece from the period of Jordan’s college career when he was honing the skills that would turn him into the greatest basketball player of all time.
