Bobby Clarke was the straw that stirred the ice for the hard-hitting Philadelphia Flyers during their notoriously successful “Broad Street Bullies” era of the 1970s. The Hall of Fame center played his entire career with the Flyers (1970-84) and captained the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 1974 and ‘75. A three-time Hart Trophy (NHL MVP) winner and nine-time All-Star, Clarke retired with 358 goals and 852 assists (1,210 points) in 1,144 career games. The perennial tough guy with that memorable toothless grin went on to spend 19 of the next 23 years as Flyers GM, further cementing his legacy among the Philly faithful.
Featured here is Bobby Clarke’s game worn road jersey from another bone-crushing 1981-82 campaign that saw him play 62 games due to a broken foot. Remarkably, considering all the pain he inflicted and suffered, it was the only season he ever played fewer than 70 games. Still, the brute was able to tally 63 points and help the Flyers make the playoffs.
This late-career exemplar exhibits heavy wear with plenty of fraying, pilling and sweat-staining. The orange mesh pullover has the Flyers' classic crest patch across the chest. Proper Sandow Sporting Knit tagging appears inside the collar with “48” handwritten in pen to denote the size. His No. “16” is sewn to both sleeves in two-color, orange on black tackle twill, with a larger version on the verso in white on black. “CLARKE” appears straight across the upper back in white tackle twill on an orange mesh nameplate. His Captain’s “C” patch appears on the upper left chest in black on white tackle twill. The original fight strap is present. MEARS has given the jersey a perfect A10 grade. A tremendous gamer from the 24th greatest player on Hockey News’ Top 100 list. Full paperwork from MEARS included.
