This was Rollie Fingers' third Sporting News National League Fireman of the Year Award in four years which is not too shabby. It was also his final Sporting News nod in the National League; he would win a fourth award in 1981 with the Milwaukee Brewers. After redefining the role of the relief pitcher in his pioneering stint as the closer for the great Oakland A's dynasty from 1972-74 Fingers followed the free agency route downstate to San Diego startling the baseball world with one of the most successful free-agent transitions in a relief pitching role that had been historically inconsistent for many of its practitioners from one year to the next. Fingers won his third National League Fireman of the Year Award in 1980 by virtue of yet another sterling campaign of nearly 70 appearances 100-plus innings and 23 saves. Truly the Padres had made one of the most successful ventures into free agency since it had been instituted only five years earlier. The award is a breathtaking piece more than worthy of such an august honor. An etched drawing of the reliever is presented in brushed silver on a black backdrop with raised silver highlights and lettering that notes "The Sporting News 1980 National League Fireman of the Year Rollie Fingers San Diego Padres." The presentation is nothing short of sensational and is further enhanced by a silver Sharpie Fingers autograph and a brushed-silver metal frame that brings the overall dimensions to 9-by-12 inches. Virtually every element of the piece appears to be in as-issued and problem-free condition.Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
