ADDENDUM: THIS IS NOT THE HELMET NOLAN RYAN WORE ON 4/12/1980 WHEN HE BELTED A HOME RUN IN HIS FIRST ASTROS START. THAT WAS A HOME GAME AND THE ASTROS WORE ORANGE HELMETS AT HOME. THERE ARE PHOTOS ONLINE TO BACK THIS UP. INSTEAD THIS IS NOLAN RYAN'S GAME-USED ROAD HELMET FROM THE 1980 SEASON. THE MINIMUM BID HAS BEEN ADJUSTED ACCORDINGLY.
This lot features Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan's game-worn Houston Astros road blue batting helmet (size 7¼) from the 1980 season. "The Express" was not known for his hitting prowess obviously but he did hit a home run in his first ever Astros start on April 12 1980. This particular helmet shows an abundance of game use from scuff marks and white paint transfers on the outer shell to serious sweat stains and other signs of wear on the interior. Ryans uniform No. "34" decal appears on the front of the bill as well as on the rear of the helmet. Ear flap protection on the left side for the right-handed hitting Ryan. There is a long crack on the front left (where the bill meets the shell) that almost connects with the Astros logo decal on the front. Of special note is a Jiminy Cricket sticker on the rear just above the 34 decal. The attached video shows how exactly this sticker came to be on this helmet - courtesy of a former radio and TV personality for the local Channel 20 in Houston. Many years later this same reporter is pictured with Ryan and the helmet.
