The 1978 USC Trojans football team coached by John Robinson finished the season 12-1 and were crowned national champions according to the Coaches Poll. While Alabama claimed the AP Poll title because it had defeated top-ranked Penn State on the field of play the Trojans pointed out that they had also only lost once and had beaten then top-ranked Alabama (24-14) in the regular season. This lot includes a team-signed USC Trojans-branded football that features more than 60 signatures in black ink from the 78 squad. Top signatures include quarterback Paul McDonald along with Clay Matthews Jr. and future Hall of Fame offensive tackle Anthony Munoz.
Includes Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
