Gary Maddox was one of the keys to the resurgence of the Philadelphia Phillies as a power in the National League East in the late 1970's to say nothing of his role in helping to bring the franchise its first World Series title in 1980. With a .285 lifetime average 117 home runs and 764 RBI he was a potent offensive force who nonetheless will be remembered for his defense. Eight Gold Gloves and a catchy nickname like the Secretary of Defense will do that for you much as does a splashy quote from a sportscaster (Kalas or Kiner?) about two thirds of the Earth being covered by water and the final third covered by Gary Maddox. We should all have such able publicity agents. This powder-blue jersey shows excellent game use. Ideal wear and puckering is present on the red stitched numerals and Phillies "P" on front. "Maddox" is embroidered in black on the collar; Size 42 Wilson tagging appears on the front along with a separate tag of "77 2." All elements of the jersey are original and unaltered save for the "Maddox" nameplate on back. There is evidence that another nameplate was at one time affixed to the back indicating that the jersey was issued to another player (post-Maddox) and the Maddox nameplate was later restored. Maddox has signed in black Sharpie on the lower front adding an inscription of "Game Jersey" directly beneath his signature.
