Presented here is an Olympic gold medal won at the 1976 Montreal Summer Games by a track & field athlete who wishes to remain anonymous. Only 364 gold medals were minted (364 silver and 381 bronze) making it a rare find in the hobby. It is gold-plated and made of gilt silver (as are all gold medals made after 1912) weighing 160 grams and measuring 6mm thick and 60mm in diameter. On the obverse is the design of Giuseppe Cassioli created for the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Games. The principal symbols are Victory Fraternity and Universality. The only modifications made were the number of the Olympiad the name of the host city and the date: "XXIe Olympiade Montral 1976". The reverse intentionally bare shows a stylized laurel crown which has stood as the symbol of victory since the Games of Antiquity and the emblem of the '76 Montreal Games. The name of the sport "Athltisme" (French term for Track & Field) appears on the rim.

The medal comes affixed to its original gold-plated chain ribbon (approx. 32" or 81 cm fully stretched) another special feature of this classy design. It also comes in its original wooden shadowbox case and black leather slide cover emblazoned with the '76 Montreal Olympics logo. All of these elements especially the fact that is was awarded to a track & field champion add to the rarity of this Olympic piece of history. At the conclusion of the auction the consignor has agreed to reveal the event for which this medal was awarded thereby exposing the name of the athlete to the winning bidder. Overall the medal presents in essentially Mint condition.

Includes Letter of Authenticity from renowned Olympic memorabilia expert Ingrid O'Neil.
