Offered here is Jim Gilliam's Los Angeles Dodgers game worn home jersey from the 1976 season during his coaching tenure with his former team. A three-time Negro League All-Star and two-time MLB All-Star, "Junior" played his entire 14-year career for the Dodgers, spanning the Brooklyn to L.A. transitional era and helping the Boys in Blue win four World Series titles. When he debuted in 1953 he had the unenviable task of taking over at second base for Jackie Robinson (forcing #42 to play third base and in outfield), but Junior did so seamlessly and earned Rookie of the Year honors. Gilliam began serving as player-coach in 1964 until securing a full-time role as coach from 1967 until his untimely death in 1978 at the age of 49.
The white knit W.A. Goodman & Sons (size 44) tagged jersey remains in decent shape overall with a minor tear in the right front midsection. The left sleeve dons the important National League Centennial (1876-1976) patch that helps date the jersey. Presents as a wonderful vintage Dodgers gamer with a level of wear consistent to that of a hands-on coach. The Dodgers went 90-72 in '76, falling just short of reaching the postseason. Walter Alston suprisingly resigned as manager with four games left in the regular season, paving the way for the Tommy Lasorda era. The jersey has been authenticated by MEARS with a grade of A7 (point deductions for the tear and mounting holes).
