The Rumble in the Jungle was a historic boxing event on October 29 1974 in Kinshasa Zaire which is now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Held at the 20th of May Stadium it pitted the undefeated world heavyweight champion George Foreman against challenger Muhammad Ali a former heavyweight champion. Ali won by knockout putting Foreman down just before the end of the eighth round after employing his controversial Rope a Dope method of tiring his opponent out. It has largely been called the greatest sporting event of the 20th century. This lot includes an oversized (28 wide by 40 high) illustrated color canvas poster publicizing the fight. Dubbed FROM SLAVESHIP TO CHAMPIONSHIP the poster shows both Foreman and Ali centered below scenes depicting slaves coming off a slave ship as well as fight promoter Don King and his trademark hair. The date on the poster reads Tuesday October 29 although the fight was actually held a day later. Oftentimes the dates of championship bouts move around a bit.
