The 1974 FIFA World Cup may have been hosted and won by West Germany, but it was “The Dutch Eleven” (Het Nederlands Elftal) and their fluid system of “Total Football” led by Johan Cruyff that captivated soccer fans and was most memorable. Netherlands manager Rinus Michaels had first introduced this organized tactic at Ajax – thanks in large part to Cruyff’s otherworldly talent – that allowed outfield players the freedom to roam up and down the pitch with players interchanging positions seamlessly. “Clockwork Orange” made it all the way to the World Cup Final in Holland’s first appearance since 1938, falling just short to the hosts by a thin 2-1 margin.
Presented here is perhaps the gem of this entire auction: Johan Cruyff’s 1974 World Cup Semifinal match worn jersey from the Netherlands’ 2-0 victory over Brazil, coinciding with Cruyff’s third and final World Cup goal of the tournament (and career) that earned him the Golden Ball award (Player of the Tournament).
In the early 1970s, there was no better footballer in the world than Johan Cruyff. The Dutch striker was a scoring machine and playmaking magician for club and country, winning the Ballon d'Or in 1971, ’72 and ’74. From 1964 to ’73 with Ajax, "The Flying Dutchman” netted 249 goals in 340 matches and won three European Cups. In five seasons with FC Barcelona (1973-78), Cruyff tallied 60 goals and 83 assists in 180 matches. A fixture on the Dutch National Team from 1966 to ’77, Cruyff tallied 33 goals in 48 caps, and Holland never lost a single match in which he scored. The IFFHS named Cruyff "European Player of the Century" in 1999, and in its latest poll of the greatest footballers across all eras, he ranks fifth behind Messi, Pelé, Maradona and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The long-sleeve, cream-colored shirt has the classic Royal Dutch Football Association lion crest in orange silk-like fabric on the left chest. Cruyff's iconic "14" is sewn on the reverse in orange numerals utilizing a unique block-lettered format. The cotton shirt manufactured by Adidas is properly tagged inside the collar (European size 4.5) and displays outstanding match use characteristics with moderate pilling and fraying to the fabric as well as evident sweat staining.
Three important elements confirm the authenticity and exclusivity of this shirt.
1) The July 3, 1974 Semifinal vs. Brazil was the only match that Holland wore its long-sleeved away kit at the 1974 World Cup. In the other five matches, they wore the orange home model (either short or long-sleeved).
2) Cruyff wore #14 with Ajax, but from 1974 to ‘78 he wore #9 with the Netherlands for all official FIFA World Cup qualifying matches as FIFA mandated every team’s starting 11 be numbered 1-11. Only during the World Cup and a few isolated friendlies did he wear #14 for the Dutch National Team during this period.
3) The Royal Dutch Football Association contested that Adidas did not pay enough to be its sponsor and official apparel manufacturer of its 1974 World Cup shirts. In defiance, the Netherlands played all matches without the Adidas Trefoil logo on the right chest. This logo is present on all shirts worn by other national teams kitted by Adidas. The trademark three-stripe logo remained on the sleeves, but Cruyff wore a specially designed two-stripe shirt to satisfy his exclusive player partnership with Puma.
