A high-grade example of Nolan Ryan's 1973 Topps #220, capturing "The Ryan Express" on the verge of his greatest season. Ryan appears in his California Angels road grays and #30 jersey, glove raised high overhead in his classic windup pose, set against a ballpark backdrop with the set's distinctive pitcher silhouette icon at lower right. The reverse highlights his 1972 breakout, noting that Ryan "became 4th greatest strikeout hurler in modern baseball" with 329 strikeouts, trailing only Sandy Koufax, Rube Waddell and Bob Feller, and featuring a cartoon recalling that he "struck out 8 straight batters" on July 9, 1972.
The card arrived just before Ryan delivered one of the most remarkable seasons of his career. In 1973 he struck out a modern-record 383 batters and threw two no-hitters, cementing his reputation as baseball's most overpowering pitcher. He went on to retire with records for strikeouts (5,714) and no-hitters (seven), along with 324 wins, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999 with 98.8 percent of the vote.
This example has been graded NM-MT 8 by PSA (cert. #160333620), a premium grade for a 1973 issue known for centering and print challenges. The card presents with vibrant color, sharp focus and clean borders, offering outstanding eye appeal. A superb example for advanced Ryan collectors and set builders seeking one of the most iconic cards from his Angels era.
