In 1973 perennial home run slugger Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves was closing in on Babe Ruths longtime career record of 714 home runs. In fact Aaron closed the 1973 season with 713 round-trippers to his credit. He would break Ruths record during the first week of the 1974 season by launching home run No. 715 on April 8th off of Dodgers southpaw Al Downing. This lot includes Aarons actual Braves' cap that he wore during the 1973 season a campaign in which he hit 40 home runs. The size 7 3/8 KM Pro Cap shows good game wear and includes Aarons uniform number (44) in black marker on the underside of the caps bill. It was originally sourced from the former Executive Director of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. An historical piece of baseball memorabilia from one of the greatest long-ball hitters ever!
Includes s Letter of Provenance from the previous owner which states that the cap was acquired from the estate of Joe Gerson who served as Executive Director of the Georgia Hall of Fame after helping the Mayor of Atlanta build Fulton County Stadium.
