In the early 1970s, there was not a better football player in the world than Johan Cruyff. The Dutch superstar was a scoring maching for club and country, playing as striker or attacking midfielder. After winning three European Cup (now UEFA Champions League) titles with Ajax, tallying an astounding 190 goals in 240 games, Cruyff joined FC Barcelona in 1973-74 and led the famed Spanish club to their first La Liga title since 1960, crushing bitter rival Real Madrid, 5-0, at Santiago Bernabeu. He then took the Netherlands to the 1974 FIFA World Cup Finals where they finished runners-up to West Germany. He was named World Cup Player of the Tournament and went on to claim his third Ballon d'Or (FIFA's World Player of thee Year) in a four-year span.
Presented here is Cruyff's FC Barcelona match-worn jersey from that magical 1973-74 campaign. The long-sleeve marroon and blue striped shirt has the iconic "F.C.B" team crest on the left chest and Cruyff's number "9" sewn on the back in white. (He wore #14 for Ajax and Netherlands.) Appropriately tagged by Mont-halt inside the collar, it has a ribbed, stretchy crew neck and a similar design on the sleeve ends. The front contains a faint stain at center and two pairs of tiny punctures in the cotton-feeling fabric. A small orange painted "X" is marked on the rear middle end of the shirttail. Overall, it displays solid wear from either La Liga, European Cup play, or both.
In 1999, Cruyff was voted "European Player of the Century" by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics, and ranked #2 behind Pelé in their "World Player of the Century" poll. His accomplishment as player and later as coach (Ajax and Barca) have earned him status us one of soccer's most figures of all-time. Needless to say, a Cruyff FCB jersey from the greatest season in his career is a museum-worthy sports artifact. Includes LOA from Real Madrid's former technical coordinator, who is also the nephew of former Brazil Football Confederation (CBF) President Ricardo Teixeira.
