This torch hails from the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, the scene of Mark Spitz's record-breaking 7 gold medals as well as the unfortunate massacre of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches at the hands of Palestinian terrorists. The nickel chromium torch is engraved "München 1972" with the interlocking Olympic rings logo, plus "Spiele der XX Olympiade" on the handle. The round platform at the base of the combustion tube bears the emblem of the Games, representing a crown of rays of light. The knob of the handle is engraved "KRUPP" with three interlocking rings. The torch is 28" long (71 cm) with the round platform having a diameter of 8" (20 cm). We are unsure if this torch was used in the relay as it has been very well-preserved and there no clear signs of it being lit. It contains light scratches from handling and storage, but stills presents in excellent condition.
In addition, the torch comes with an appealing souvenir torch lighter from the Munich 1972 Summer Olympics. The metal lighter, measuring 11.75″ in length and 4″ in width, impressively replicates the official torch used during the Munich torch relay, with the handle inscribed “Spiele der XX Olympiad, Munchen 1972,” and the platform at the base of the combustion tube featuring the design of the Munich Games emblem. The torch lighter bears some light scuffs and scratches, with the sparkwheel in fine working condition (tube does not contain butane fuel). This is the first torch lighter we've ever offered, a great bonus to the torch itself!
