On May 31 1972 Hank Aaron hit his 648th home run to tie Willie Mays as the All-Time Leader in the National League and move one step closer to overtaking the immortal Babe Ruth. After this home run Willie Mays would never be able to catch Aaron again. The home run was hit off of San Diego Padre left handed pitcher Fred Norman and travelled high into the empty seats of Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium. The home run ball hit an empty blue colored seat with such force that a pair of blue marks were left on the baseball from the back slats of the seat. The ball was retrieved by Donald Davidson the Braves Traveling Secretary and Public Relations Director for nearly 40 years and originates from his estate. Aaron in his book "If I Had A Hammer" states that Davidson was one of his best friends and had seen every one of his home runs save one. Across the sweet spot of the ONL(Feeney) baseball in Donaldson's hand is printed "Hank Aaron #648 - tie Willie Mays 5/31/72 vs San Diego" and on the panel below "Hit 1st inning - 0 on vs Fred Norman Final Score ATL 5 SD 4". Ball exhibits good game use with the telltale blue marks just to the right of the sweet spot.
