Born in Brazil’s southern state of Minas Gerais, Edson Arantes do Nascimento – the football legend known only as Pelé – signed his first professional contract in 1956 at the age of 15 with prestigious Brazilian club, Santos FC. The following year, he made his first appearance with the Brazil National Team at age 16. During his prolific international career, Pelé won three FIFA World Cup titles (1958, 1962 and 1970) – the only player ever to do so for his country. He retired as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 91 caps, and his unfathomable 1,283 career goals in all competitions will never be topped.
Fresh to the hobby comes this Pelé Brazil National Team match worn, signed and inscribed jersey dating to 1971. The yellow shirt with a green-ribbed collar and sleeves has the CBD (Confederação Brasileira de Desportos or Brazilian Sport Confederation, predecessor of the current Brazilian Football Confederation) embroidered patch over the left chest. Sewn on the reverse is Pelé’s famous number “10” in green. Proper “ATHLETA” manufacturer’s tagging appears on the inner collar in a black label that dates it to Brazil’s post-1970 World Cup style. No size is shown but it measures out to Pelé’s specifications according to MEARS. On the front of the shirt, Pelé has signed “Ao amigo um abrago do Edson = Pelé” [To my friend, a hug from Edson = Pelé] in faded black pen. The shirt exhibits outstanding evidence of wear with significant fraying to the back numbers and large sweat stains surrounding the armpits.
Provenance: Gifted by Pelé to fellow Brazilian footballer José Guilherme Baldocchi, a center back who played with Pelé on Brazil's triumphant 1970 World Cup squad. Includes letter signed by Baldocchi in 2023. (He is now 79 years old.)
Authentication: Letter from MEARS dating the shirt to the 1957-58 season and verifying the shirt's specs as being consistent with Brazil jerseys from the period and sized to fit Pelé. Full LOA from PSA/DNA for the autograph and inscription (all in Pelé’s hand).
